"Basically a Super 12C." That is what Road & Track says about the 2015 McLaren 650S.

Apart from the 650S's face, the car is obviously 12C-derived. R&D says that had it not been for the new model designation, it would be seen as a mid-cycle refresh.

Underneath the body there is a Macca 3.8-liter turbo V8 which will produce 641 hp. The engineering team has made tweaks to the overall performance and handling too. The 650S has the same drag coefficient as the 12C, but the 650S has more downforce, and has had changes to the airbrake and a rear bumper that borrows from the GT3 race car.

Always seen this as being a "super 12c", it's like an improved 12c to me.
Even going off of looks alone it looks very close to the 12c, some people might mistaken it for a 12c.

to me it seems like an even sportier version of the 12c. It could even come across as a 12c upgrade but it seems like Mclaren didn't want to go that way.

Maybe it can even be better worded as the 12C successor?

I guess they just want to keep the 12c as the cheaper model.

I am looking forward to seeing a track test of the 12c vs the 650s

On the plus side is that people who still want a 12C and don't want to get a 650S can consider getting a used 12C and save even more.
